JANET JACKSON TO CHAIR amfAR’s INAUGURAL MILAN FASHION WEEK EVENT08/01/09
New York, NY, August 1, 2009---On September 28, 2009, amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, will present amfAR Milano, the Foundation’s inaugural benefit for AIDS research held in conjunction with Milan Fashion Week. Janet Jackson—fashion icon and winner of multiple Grammy Awards—will chair the event along with Asia Argento, Roberto Bolle, Dr. Hermann Bühlbecker, Andrea Castronovo, Dean and Dan Caten, Lapo Elkann, and Cristina Lucchini. Jackson has long been a dedicated philanthropist and HIV/AIDS activist.
“We are profoundly grateful to Janet Jackson for joining amfAR as a chair of its first event in Milan,” said Kevin Robert Frost, amfAR’s chief executive officer. “She brings incomparable grace and a history of dedication to the fight against AIDS.”
amfAR Milano will be presented by D Squared², BMW Group Italia, and Lambertz, along with media partner Vanity Fair and hotel partner Westin Palace Milano. The black-tie evening will take place at Milan’s La Permanente and will feature cocktails, dinner, dancing (with DJ Bob Sinclar), and amfAR’s famed live auction of unique items.
“For amfAR, coming to Milan is like coming home—or at least like visiting your closest friends,” Frost said. “The Italian fashion community has been incredibly welcoming and generous to amfAR.”
Through the years, the Italian fashion community has been exemplary in its support of amfAR, with Italian fashion houses and designers underwriting and leading many of the Foundation’s most successful fundraising efforts. Since amfAR’s first international benefit, held in 1993 during the Cannes Film Festival and hosted by amfAR Founding International Chairman Dame Elizabeth Taylor, the Foundation’s international galas in Cannes, Venice, Rome, and Dubai have become some of the most high-profile and eagerly anticipated charity events in the world and have helped raise more than $50 million for critical AIDS research programs.
